Sandalwood is a tree with fragrant wood. The wood is fine-grained, heavy, and yellow. It retains its scent for decades making this wood and its scent highly desirable. The trees are medium sized and belong to the same botanical family as the mistletoe.
The oil has a slightly sweet woodsy scent. To extract this oil, the wood of the tree is steam distilled. The part of the tree with the highest amount of oil is the stump and roots and for this reason, these trees aren’t simply cut down but fully pulled up from the ground. This oil isn’t the cheapest because the trees have to age at least 15 years before the oil extracted from the tree becomes fragrant enough.
There’s two types of sandalwood used to make essential oils. The most prized sandalwood is the Indian sandalwood (Santalum album). Unfortunately, demand for the Indian sandalwood is so high that the trees can’t grow fast enough. A cheaper alternative is the Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum). These oils are often used to scent fragrances such as perfumes.

Sandalwood is a much sought after oil because of all its benefits. These benefits are due to the properties of this oil. It is anti-inflammatory. It also has anti-carcinoma properties which help the oil protect against some cancers and tumors. It is also an astringent so it helps wounds to heal. It’s antidepressant properties help keep your emotions balanced. It’s used for insomnia because it has sedative properties as well.
For a calming massage, mix 6 drops of sandalwood oil with two teaspoons of your carrier oil.
The oil is extracted from the wood part of the tree via steam distillation.
You can use sandalwood essential oil in a diffuser by adding 2 to 4 drops into your diffuser filled with water.
For topical applications, use just a drop or two. If your skin is sensitive, then dilute with a carrier oil.

For babies, dilute at 0.5% or even 0.25% (half of the 0.5% amount. So, use 3 drops of your essential oil and dilute it in 4 teaspoons of carrier oil for 0.5% or 8 teaspoons of carrier oil for 0.25%.
Use the 1% dilution ratio for daily use. Mix 3 essential oil drops for every 2 teaspoons of carrier oil.
If you need a stronger dose for a short period of time, use the 5% dilution ratio by adding 15 essential oil drops for every 2 teaspoons of carrier oil.
For really, really severe situations, you can up it to 10 percent dilution ratio for small acute areas of concern. For this, you would mix 15 essential oil drops for every teaspoon of carrier oil.
